Secrets of Lemon Balm

If anyone who is suffering from hyperthyroid just as I am, I hope this article would be able to help you. I've been taking anti-thyroid drugs for quite sometime yet the results from the same were not effective. Then I read an article about the healing benefits of lemon balm for hyperthyroid. I had my brother who is in the US, send me a couple of bottles of lemon balm tablets and tried it for a few months. Lo and behold, it really is effective as my thyroid hormones returned to normal levels. But let me remind you to follow your doctor's prescribed medication and take lemon balm as a supplementary diet only and inform your doctor as well. Anyway here are some information about the healing effects of lemon, and by the way the plant is available here in the Philippines, you can search them at sulit.com.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a member of the mint family, has long been considered a "calming" herb. It has been used since the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, improve appetite, and ease pain and discomfort associated with digestion (including flatulence and bloating as well as colic). Even before the Middle Ages, lemon balm was steeped in wine to lift the spirits, help heal wounds, and treat venomous insect bites and stings. Today, lemon balm is often combined with other calming, soothing herbs, such as valerian, to enhance the overall relaxing effect.

Lemon Balm for Anxiety and Insomnia
Several studies have found that lemon balm combined with other calming herbs (such as valerian) helps reduce anxiety and promote sleep. Few studies have investigated the safety and effectiveness of oral lemon balm alone, however. For example, in one recent study of people with minor sleep disorders, those who ingested an herbal combination of valerian and lemon balm reported sleeping much better than those who ingested placebo pills. It is not clear from these studies, however, whether lemon balm itself (or the combined action of lemon balm and valerian) is responsible for these sleep-inducing effects.

Lemon balm may also be a good help in case of Grave's disease - an autoimmune condition where individuals suffer from excess thyroid hormone due to an overactive thyroid. The herb helps to block some of the secretion of the thyroid gland and its ability to release hormones in the body.
Some scientific studies suggest that the herb is beneficial for a variety of health problems, including Alzheimer's disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and hyperthyroidism. Some interesting point is that Lemon balm could have anti-HIV properties. But all these health benefits need more confirmation and further researches.
